Remembering Thad C. Williams
An A-20J Havoc attack bomber named “The Real McCoy” of Thad C. Williams’ 646th Bomb Squadron (Light, squadron code 8U) of the 410th Bomb Group (Light) is seen over a broken cloud deck late during World War II. The A-20J featured am acrylic glass nose which allowed the aircraft to carry a bombardier and bombsight (seen in the photo) and serve as a formation leader in bombing missions, especially for the more numerous gun-nosed version of the Havoc bombers. The serial number for this aircraft, 43-21745, is only a few numbers away from the A-20J that Thad Williams flew on his last combat mission, 43-21740. This picture was taken some time after D-Day as the recognition stripes atop the aircraft have been painted out. (USAF Photo)
