Witt became the first commander of the WACs at PAAB in July of 1943, seeing the unit through several redesignations as the Army sought to optimize WAC unit designations and align them with similar units. In June, 1942, Hollywood star Lana Turner embarked on a 10-week war bond tour which brought her to the pacific Northwest during Portland’s Rose Festival time in June, 1942. In her time in Portland she visited the servicemen at PAAB. Here, 1942 Rose Festival Queen Shirley Fowler from Franklin High School is shown as she anointed Lana Turner as an honorary member of the Rose Court. The film star spent a day outside the Meier & Frank Department Store to raise money for war bonds, selling a kiss on the cheek for $18.75. (Wikipedia)
