First blood in the Air
F/O Wesley R. “Bob” Izzard of the 404FS fell victim to a Luftwaffe Me-109 on the morning of June 8, 1944. He bailed out of his stricken P-47 and with the help of the French resistance was able to return to England by August, 1944. He returned to flight duty and eventually completed 150 combat missions in the European Theater. (Courtesy “Winged Boot”).
