We Remember Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day), 1945
A 405th Fighter Squadron Thunderbolt, probably P-47D-28-RA serial number 42-28900, shows some battle damage from flak. Although the holes atop the fuselage and horizontal stabilizer appear small, bullets or fragments of exploding shells could easily cause critical harm to the pilot or components inside the aircraft. Repair of battle-damaged aircraft was an ongoing activity during the war in addition to the usual required maintenance. (The Story of the 371st Fighter Group in the E.T.O.)
