The Oregon Air Guard and Victory over Japan
Some aerial victories against Japanese fighters are mission results for the B-29 crews of 1st Lt. Bill Stevenson’s 40th Bomb Group as shown here. Stevenson was a charter member of Oregon’s 123rd Observation Squadron. Sgt. Robert N. Archer of Medford, Oregon, was in charge of the scoreboard at their base in India showing Japanese planes destroyed, probably destroyed or damaged by squadrons of the 40th Bomb Group. This chart and various wall panels on the War Room at this 20th Bomber Command base kept the men informed on the latest developments in all war theatres. (NARA, via 40th Bomb Group Association)
