The Birth Pangs of Portland ANG Base – Part II: Major Units Arrive
The Republic Aviation Corporation built the P-43 Lancer single-engine pursuit plane for the U.S. Army, which accepted the first examples in 1940. It was the first fighter type aircraft to be based at Portland Air Base when the 55th Pursuit Group equipped with the type in the spring of 1941, with aircraft coming straight from the Republic production line.
