Pacific Rescue, Pacific Loss
Second Lieutenant Michael G. Markstaller served as an F-4C Phantom II pilot with the Oregon Air National Guard’s 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and was seriously injured in the loss of his F-4 on 3 January 1989 off the coast of Tillamook, Oregon. He is pictured here afterwards, in civilian clothes and a leg cast in a squadron photo in 1989 before the unit transitioned to the F-15 Eagle fighter. (142nd Fighter Wing history archives)
