The Mysterious Fate of William T. “Shorty” Bales, Jr.

Frankfurt/Eschborn Airfield (Advanced Landing Ground Y-74) was the base of origin for the last mission of Capt. “Shorty” Bales on April 13, 1945. The 371st Fighter Group operated from this field from April 7 through V-E Day on May 8, 1945. This postwar (1946) photo shows the field in use by C-47 transport aircraft of the European Air Transport Service, the fighters having long moved on to other bases. (US Army Germany.com)
