The Mysterious Fate of William T. “Shorty” Bales, Jr.
As a member of the 406th Fighter Squadron’s Yellow Flight on this April 13, 1945 mission which saw action in the Hainichen area of Germany, Capt. Bales attacked motor transport targets of opportunity on the autobahn near Hainichen, before a member of Red Flight nearby called out the presence of enemy aircraft. This view is of a 371st Fighter Group strafing attack against motor transport at an unidentified location. (The Story of the 371st Fighter Group in the ETO)
