The Beloved Portland Air Base Chapel
Portland Air Base Chapel in the Flood of 1948. In 1948 the Columbia River swelled and breached the dike along adjacent to the Portland Airport/Air Base, flooding the entire base. Though some of the temporary wartime construction buildings floated off their foundations and drifted around to other resting places, the chapel did not, and remained firmly fixed to its foundation.
