The Storm Before the Calm – October, 1962 Part 1: The Columbus Day Storm

The Mt. Hebo AN/MPS-11 search radar’s inflatable radome was punctured and deflated, and the radar antenna ripped from its base at the top of a small building and flung to the ground, seen at the right of the picture. In the foreground is a hexagonal-shaped panel from the rigid radome then under construction for the new AN/FPS-24 search radar, which was also destroyed in the storm. (David Casteel, via Flickr)
