Veterans of The Mighty Eighth: The Oregon Air National Guard’s connections to the Eighth Air Force of World War II

Capt. Gordon L. Doolittle and his crew chief T/Sgt Levi Campbell, assigned to the 435th Fighter Squadron 479th Fighter Group stand by the squadron’s P-51D Mustang, serial number 44-14406, squadron code J2+P, nicknamed "Mugs." Doolittle achieved three aerial victories during the war and completed 70 missions. He joined the Oregon ANG after the war and eventually commanded the organization from 1962 to 1977, retiring with the rank of major general. (American Air Museum in Britain)
