The Women of Portland Army Air Base in World War II: Part I, 1941 to 1943
Mary F. Witt became the first commander of the WACs at PAAB in July of 1943, seeing the unit through several redesignations as the Army sought to optimize WAC unit designations and align them with similar units. In late-March, 1943, she became the Commanding Officer of Squadron “W” of the 432nd Army Air Force Base Unit at Portland. (PAAB History, 142nd Wing History Archive)
