An Anniversary and an Adjustment: Remembering the former POWs of the 142nd Wing
Maj. William T. “Shorty” Bates, Jr. force-landed in a dogfight in enemy-held territory in Germany on April 13, 1945 and was fatally shot by civilians. Taken captive, he died of his wounds the next day in a German hospital. (The Story of the 371st Fighter Group in the E.T.O.)
