First Campaign: The 371st Fighter Group in the Air Offensive, Europe
Capt William R. Lamb, 404th Fighter Squadron, took part in the ragged May 2, 1944 escort mission, and on return was forced to belly-land with wheels up back at Bisterne when one of his P-47’s main landing gear stuck in the retracted position and would not lower. And this was the result, though the aircraft, serial number 42-76560 was repaired and flew again. (The Story of the 371st Fighter Group in the E.T.O.)
