Remembering Air Warrior “Rocky” Gray on Memorial Day, 2024
Maj. Rockford V. Gray, 30, of…Dallas, Texas, a fighter pilot with a 9th AF unit, was credited with his 5th, 6th and 7th kills recently, a trio of FW-190s downed over the invasion area. Maj. Gray was also credited with a “probable”. Attacking a flight of 6 enemy aircraft, Maj. Gray destroyed two and saw a third, the probable, limp smoking into cloud cover. Simultaneously, 1 190 lit on his tail, spraying his plane. Maj. Gray half-rolled at 5,000-feet, diving at 400 mph with the FW in pursuit. As he pulled out of the dive, without firing a shot, Maj. Gray was credited with number three. Maj. Gray’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James D. Waid, live in Cincinnati, Ohio. His wife resides at their Dallas address. (Official US Army photograph, via Fold3)
