Getting Patton to the Rhine
The fighter squadron armorers at Metz (Y-34) were kept busy to keep aircraft armed for all the missions flown by the 371st Fighter Group. Not only were the P-47 pilots burning up tens of thousands of rounds of .50 caliber machine gun ammunition in lucrative attacks against enemy forces, but they were also burning up gun barrels from the frequent, intense strafing against the enemy.
