“THE WAR IN EUROPE IS DEFINITELY OVER” - The 371st Fighter Group and Victory in Europe, 1945
First Lieutenant Lawrence D. Damewood of the 406th Fighter Squadron, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his combat mission flown on 3 October 1944. He is shown here in a portrait taken when he was an aviation cadet before winning his pilot wings and then his service in the 371st Fighter Group. He continued in USAF service after the war, flying with the Skyblazers flight demonstration team in Europe in the 1950s and in the F-105 Thunderchief with the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron during the Vietnam War.
