“…2 or 3 bursts of flak were very close…” - Remembering Lt. Robert A. Mezzetti on both sides of the Atlantic

This plain portrait image of 2nd Lt. Robert A. Mezzetti was typical of those taken as a reference for pilots during the Second World War. Lt. Mezzetti was assigned to the 405th Fighter Squadron on May 18, 1944 and killed in action on August 2, 1944 near Liffré, France. He flew combat in the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane in the Air Offensive, Europe, Normandy and Northern France campaigns in the European Theater of Operations and was credited with one aerial victory.
