Chomping at the Bit – The 371st Fighter Group’s Start on D-Day
Capt. Thomas J. Mueller, the “B” Flight commander in the 371st Fighter Group’s 404th Fighter Squadron, was 2nd Lt. Joseph E. Larochelle’s flight leader on D-Day when Larochelle was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He himself was killed on a combat mission near Mortain, France a few weeks later, on July 31, 1944.
