Twenty Months In and Out-Country – Col. Scott Powell in Southeast Asia, 1971-1972
A 390th TFS F-4D Phantom II returns to Da Nang Air Base after an air interdiction mission over Laos wearing the Wild Boar insignia on the engine intake forward. Note the empty Multiple Ejector Racks (MER) beneath the wings, lack of air-to-air armament (no AIM-7 Sparrow / AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles), but the presence of an electronic countermeasures pod. The air-to-ground mission was flown in proximity to threats from North Vietnamese air defense forces which were equipped with radar-guided surface-to-air missiles (e.g. the SA-2 Guideline) and/or radar-controlled larger caliber anti-aircraft artillery (e.g S-60 57mm guns).
