Twenty Months In and Out-Country – Col. Scott Powell in Southeast Asia, 1971-1972
A view looking north along the USAF fighter flightline and revetment row at Da Nang Air Base, 1971. By this point in the war, “Wonderarch” shelters made of concrete and steel protected individual fighter plane revetments against enemy rocket attacks on the base. One of Da Nang’s nicknames was “Rocket City.” The USAF built 98 of these shelters between 1968 and 1970; US Marine Corps engineers built additional ones at Da Nang for their aircraft.
