Twenty Months In and Out-Country – Col. Scott Powell in Southeast Asia, 1971-1972

A view of the Hanoi area looking northeast across the city from the cockpit of Capt. Scott Powell’s F-4E during Linebacker operations in the summer of 1972. Note the air base at Gia Lam, resembling a “T” across the Red River from the Hanoi metro area in the foreground. Gia Lam Air Base was a focal point for the 1973 repatriation of American former prisoners of war held by Vietnam, and the first evacuation flight by C-141 Starlifter jet transport of 116 former POWs took place from there on February 12, 1973.
