“...It was anticlimactic” - Victory in Europe Day for the 371st Fighter Group

After the guns fell silent, 371st Fighter Group Thunderbolt pilot Capt. Lincoln Derick of Sewaren, New Jersey stood for a photo with a 404th Fighter Squadron Republic P-47D-28-RE Thunderbolt Serial 44-20284, squadron code 9Q-O bar. Derick was assigned to the 404th Fighter Squadron, one of three fighter squadrons then assigned to the group (405th and 406th Fighter Squadrons). The photo was taken at Fürth-Industriehafen Airfield in Germany where the group was stationed between early May and mid-August, 1945. After the war, the 404th was redesignated as the 186th Fighter Squadron and allotted to the state of Montana. It is the Montana Air National Guard’s 186th Airlift Squadron today.
