An Austrian V-J Day: The 371st Fighter Group and the Victory over Japan

Lineup of 79th Fighter Group P-47 Thunderbolts, possibly at Horsching. Note however the fully painted engine cowling, with alternating painted cowl flaps on nearest P-47 at left, as well as the white stripe on the tail of the farthest P-47 at right, markings also seen on 371st Fighter Group P-47s. It’s possible that when the 371st left Horsching in mid-September, 1945 that the group left some of its aircraft behind, or exchanged some of them with the 79th Fighter Group.
