An Austrian V-J Day: The 371st Fighter Group and the Victory over Japan

Unidentified personnel, possible surrendered German soldiers or displaced personnel, sweep an aircraft parking ramp, probably at Horsching. A 79th Fighter Group hack transport used for various utility tasks, a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, sits in the background with the 79th groups’s distinctive marking of a blue tail with three yellow bolts of lightning. The 371st Fighter Group also had a B-25 hack transport for a while, in olive drab over neutral gray, nicknamed “Strictly Socialite.” It may likely have been the group B-25C-1, serial number 41-13195W (War Weary), lost in a mishap on June 19, 1945 while making a single-engine emergency landing at Advanced Landing Ground A-97 Sandweiler in Luxembourg.
