On Veterans Day, 2010, Vietnam combat veteran Col Lars Granath spoke about his postwar experience with the F-15 Eagle in a ceremony which dedicated F-15A Eagle serial number 73-089 at the Evergreen Air & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. F-4C Phantom II 63-7647 nearby at the right shows two red stars for aerial victories aircrew obtained in it during the Vietnam War. Col Granath is seen here before the ceremony, at the lower left in the white pants and dark sportcoat standing near the two jets which signify the 142nd Wing’s transformation which added an air superiority capability to the unit. This memorial plaque to 35th PRS pilot 1st Lt. Franklin H. McKinney, who went MIA on 5 November 1944, was presented in 2018 by Captain Daniel Jackson, USAF, also an author of China-Theater American military aviation history, to citizens in Ban Mae Kua, Thailand. Remembered, Not Forgotten on National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2020

First Lieutenant Merlin R. Allen was assigned to the 35th Photo Recon Squadron in 1944 and served as an aerial photo-interpreter. After deploying with the squadron to China at some point he was attached and/or reassigned to the 16th Combat Camera Unit (16th CCU) of 14th Air Force. Lt. Remembering Air Warrior “Rocky” Gray on Memorial Day, 2024

This is a Gun Camera Machine Report completed for the gun camera film shot by Maj. Rockford V. Gray of the 371st Fighter Group during a combat mission flown on August 7, 1944. Other multiple sources indicate he flew this mission with the group’s 405th Fighter Squadron, as opposed to the 404th FS listed here. Gun camera film was a common source of data to help verify pilot claims for aerial victories. In this case, Maj. Gray claimed that he had damaged a Luftwaffe Ju-88 bomber on the ground. Remembering Air Warrior “Rocky” Gray on Memorial Day, 2024

Maj. Rockford V. Gray, 30, of…Dallas, Texas, a fighter pilot with a 9th AF unit, was credited with his 5th, 6th and 7th kills recently, a trio of FW-190s downed over the invasion area. Maj. Gray was also credited with a “probable”. Attacking a flight of 6 enemy aircraft, Maj. Gray destroyed two and saw a third, the probable, limp smoking into cloud cover. Simultaneously, 1 190 lit on his tail, spraying his plane. Maj. Gray half-rolled at 5,000-feet, diving at 400 mph with the FW in pursuit. As he pulled out of the dive, without firing a shot, Maj. Gray was credited with number three. Maj. Gray’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James D. Waid, live in Cincinnati, Ohio. His wife resides at their Dallas address. (Official US Army photograph, via Fold3)
