Redhawk Reflections on the First American Mission in Europe, 1942
The Halpro unit was originally equipped with 23 B-24D bombers. This is one of them, B-24D serial number 41-11636, Halpro#24, nicknamed “Wash’s Tub.” Although it did not participate in the first Ploiesti mission of June 12, 1942, this aircraft was later assigned to the 376th Bomb Group and did fly on and survive the famous low-level attack on Ploiesti carried out on August 1, 1943. In 15 months in the Middle East it flew 73 missions, with 551 combat hours, flying over 100,000 miles and delivering 219 tons of ordnance against enemy targets and claims of 22 enemy aircraft. The aircraft returned to the States in September, 1943, as war weary and for a War Bond tour before being scrapped in Spokane, WA in October, 1944. (Courtesy 376th HBG Veterans Association)
