Major Carlisle I. Ferris, father of famed aviation artist Keith Ferris, served as the 123rd Observation Squadron’s Air Corps Instructor from 4 February to September 1941. Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin F. Giles, Chief of the National Guard Bureau’s Aviation Division, played an important role in the creation of ten additional National Guard aviation squadrons in the years before World War II, including Oregon’s 123rd Observation Squadron. (Air National Guard)

Major G. Robert Dodson was the first commander of Oregon’s first military aviation unit, the 123rd Observation Squadron.
