Maj. Rockford V. Gray, 30, of…Dallas, Texas, a fighter pilot with a 9th AF unit, was credited with his 5th, 6th and 7th kills recently, a trio of FW-190s downed over the invasion area. Maj. Gray was also credited with a “probable”. Attacking a flight of 6 enemy aircraft, Maj. Gray destroyed two and saw a third, the probable, limp smoking into cloud cover. Simultaneously, 1 190 lit on his tail, spraying his plane. Maj. Gray half-rolled at 5,000-feet, diving at 400 mph with the FW in pursuit. As he pulled out of the dive, without firing a shot, Maj. Gray was credited with number three. Maj. Gray’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James D. Waid, live in Cincinnati, Ohio. His wife resides at their Dallas address. (Official US Army photograph, via Fold3)

The rough mission of the 416th Bomb Group (Light) on May 27, 1944 against the railroad marshaling yard at Amiens, France was escorted by fighter pilots of the 371st Fighter Group, who witnessed the event captured in this picture as watched an A-20 fall to enemy fire over the target. At center of the picture with right engine burning is A-20G-35 S/N 43-10203, code 5H-R flown by pilot 1st Lt. Lucian J Siracusa of the 668th Bomb Sq. (L), 416th Bomb Gp. Lamb, 404th Fighter Squadron, took part in the ragged May 2, 1944 escort mission, and on return was forced to belly-land with wheels up back at Bisterne when one of his P-47’s main landing gear stuck in the retracted position and would not lower.
