A 388th Tactical Fighter Wing F-4E prepares to launch on a combat sortie from within the shelter of a “Wonder Arch” revetment at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, during the Spring Invasion of 1972. The arches protected aircraft from North Vietnamese Army/Viet Cong rocket attacks. 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron F-4E 67-0379 is seen here heading north on a mission of Christmas Day, 1971. Note the brightly colored Mk 82 500-lb bombs prepared for special delivery, and the fuse extenders on the bombs mounted on the wings, to ensure their blast and fragmentation effects would be released that far above the ground. Lars Granath flew a number of interdiction missions against enemy forces infiltrating into South Vietnam from Laos, as well as strike missions against targets in North Vietnam. The squadron was based at Korat RTAFB from 1966 to 1972, flying the F-105D Thunderchief 1966-1968 and then the F-4E Phantom II 1968-1972. 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron Fightin’ Bulls F-4E 67-0306 was “Lars Granath’s aircraft,” and is seen here during a level weapons delivery of a dozen Mk 82 500-lb bombs in late 1971-1972. This suggests either a LORAN-guided drop with an F-4D or RF-4C from another wing used to navigate to a weather-obscured target area, or a Combat Skypot ground-based radar-guided delivery on an enemy target. Tail number 306 survived combat in Southeast Asia and then served with the 36th TFS Flying Fiends at Osan AB, Korea, before being lost in an accident with another unit in Alaska. View of previously damaged P-47D-30-RA Thunderbolt, serial number 44-33148 of the 404th Fighter Squadron (squadron code 9Q), 371st Fighter Group, in one of the repaired hangars at Metz which offered much improved conditions to the engineers (aircraft maintainers) working to keep them flying. The fighter squadron armorers at Metz (Y-34) were kept busy to keep aircraft armed for all the missions flown by the 371st Fighter Group. Not only were the P-47 pilots burning up tens of thousands of rounds of .50 caliber machine gun ammunition in lucrative attacks against enemy forces, but they were also burning up gun barrels from the frequent, intense strafing against the enemy.
