Flight Officer Wesley R. Bob” Izzard was a P-47 Thunderbolt pilot assigned to the 404th Fighter Squadron, 371st Fighter Group in World War II. He was shot down on June 8, 1944, but managed to evade capture with the help of French citizens, and return to duty to continue flying combat. This photo on the back cover of his 1994 book, Winged Boot,” has the following caption: “A P-47 “Jug” still in its black and white invasion paint stripes, ready for a Tactical Mission. It is armed with a 1,000 pound bomb under each wing, a 500 pound bomb on the belly shackle and eight .50 caliber machine guns which are loaded with at least 400 rounds of ammunition each.”
