The Oregonians of the Doolittle Raid on Japan, April 18, 1942

A modified B-25B Mitchell medium bomber takes off from the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) to attack the Home Islands of Imperial Japan on April 18, 1942, about 170-miles short of their planned takeoff point after the carrier task force was spotted by an enemy patrol ship. The bombers launched earlier than desired but for the most part managed to hit their assigned targets. Then after 13 hours in the air the crews crash-landed or bailed out in various places in China as they made their way from Japan – the only intact aircraft was one B-25 which landed in the Soviet Far East and was interned with its crew by the Soviets. The Mysterious Fate of William T. “Shorty” Bales, Jr.

As a member of the 406th Fighter Squadron’s Yellow Flight on this April 13, 1945 mission which saw action in the Hainichen area of Germany, Capt. Bales attacked motor transport targets of opportunity on the autobahn near Hainichen, before a member of Red Flight nearby called out the presence of enemy aircraft. A pair of Messerschmitt Me-110 (also knowns as Bf-110) Zerstorer (Destroyer) fighters from the are pictured over Budapest, Hungary in 1944; the fuselage code of the aircraft nearest (DE+MP) indicates the aircraft were assigned to Ausbildungs Kommando Zerstorer, a training unit for Hungarian air units operating the type (unit ID by Heikki Hyttinen). Two Me-110s from Jagdgeschwader 400 at Brandis Airfield, Germany were involved in the fateful aerial encounter of 13 April 1945 near Hainichen involving P-47s of the 406th Fighter Squadron, 371st Fighter Group and Capt. Frankfurt/Eschborn Airfield (Advanced Landing Ground Y-74) was the base of origin for the last mission of Capt. “Shorty” Bales on April 13, 1945. The 371st Fighter Group operated from this field from April 7 through V-E Day on May 8, 1945.
