First Lieutenant Mark A. Baker served as a Weapons System Officer in the F-4C Phantom II with the 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron of the Oregon Air National Guard in the 1980s. Markstaller served as an F-4C Phantom II pilot with the Oregon Air National Guard’s 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron and was seriously injured in the loss of his F-4 on 3 January 1989 off the coast of Tillamook, Oregon. In gratitude for US Coast Guard rescue swimmer Petty Officer Kelly Mogk’s valiant efforts which saved the life of 2nd Lt. Michael Markstaller in the mishap of 3 January 1989, members of the 142nd Fighter-Interceptor Group (142nd FIG) provided her with an F-4C Phantom II orientation flight in the summer of 1989.
