123rd Fighter Squadron pilot 1st Lt. Ernie Wakehouse was called to active duty during the Korean War. He is seen here in Korea reclining atop a shark mouthed F-51D Mustang of the 18th Fighter-Bomber Group in the combat zone along with another fighter pilot, possibly 1st Lt. Wallace Parks, also on temporary duty overseas from the 123rd Fighter Squadron. He completed his wartime tour of duty in the 18th FBG by completing 100 combat missions in the three-month period between September 12 and December 16, 1951. (142nd Wing History Archive)

The 371st Fighter Group’s 405th Fighter Squadron “Damn Yankee,” Republic P-47D-16-RE Thunderbolt serial number 42-76099, sports a hungry mouth on its engine cowling – the eye is obscured by propeller blade. The aircraft is pictured here awaiting fuses for 500-lb bombs beneath the wings, likely at Advanced Landing Ground A-6 (Beuzeville Airfield, aka La Londe), near Ste-Mère-Église, France sometime after D-Day in the summer of 1944. This P-47 shows numerous symbols below the cockpit windscreen for bombing, fighter sweeps and top cover missions flown. It served on with the squadron until at least until October 8, 1944 when it was badly damaged in a taxiing accident at Dole/Tavaux Airfield (Y-7), France. This famous photograph was taken by American Volunteer Group Flying Tiger pilot Robert T. “R.T.” Smith showing a flight of Tomahawk fighters (Curtiss factory model number H81-A3, equivalent of USAAF P-40B) of the AVG’s 3rd Squadron, Hell’s Angels on May 28, 1942 near the Salween River Gorge marking the China-Burma border. The aircraft and pilots in view that day include #68 flown by Arvid Olson, #46 (Bob Prescott), #49 (Tom Hayward), #24 (Oregon’s Ken Jernstedt), and #74 (Link Laughlin). Even Better with Age: The 142nd Wing turns 78

Millville Army Air Field, New Jersey in 1943. In January 1943, Millville Army Air Field opened as a gunnery school for fighter pilots. Gunnery training began with Curtiss P-40F Warhawk aircraft, but after a few weeks, the P-40s were gone, and the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt ruled the skies over Cumberland County. During its three year existence, thousands of soldiers and civilians served here, with about 1,500 pilots receiving advanced fighter training in the Thunderbolt. (Courtesy baileytown-nj.com)

Camp Springs, Maryland. Capt. Andrew W. Salter, Jr., the first commanding officer of what would become Joint Base Andrews, welcomes the first flying trainees at the Camp Springs Maryland airfield in May, 1943. The base achieved full operating capability on May 2, 1943 and became a super-base controlling much of the Eastern seaboard's military activities less than two months later. The Pioneer Mustang Group’s Portland Sojourn

Lieutenant Colonel James H. Howard, seen here in a 354th Fighter Group P-51B Mustang fighter depicting his aerial victories, was a prewar US Navy fighter pilot who flew with the Flying Tigers of the American Volunteer Group in 1941-42. He then joined the USAAF as a pilot in, and later commander of, the 356th Fighter Squadron. He was the only fighter pilot in the European Theater of Operations to be awarded the Medal of Honor for single-handedly defending B-17s of the 401st Bomb Group, northwest of Halberstadt, Germany on 11 January 1944. He became the Group’s second commander on February 12, 1944, following the loss of Col. Martin in combat over Germany. Corporal William W. Louie, poses on a 356th Fighter Squadron’s Bell P-39N-1 Airacobra, serial number 42-9362. Note the distinctive squadron insignia on the aircraft door, as well as the olive drab over neutral gray colors and other unit markings. In June, 1943 the 356th moved to Salem, Oregon, where they spent four months honing their flying skills before overseas deployment. The Pioneer Mustang Group’s Portland Sojourn

Col. Kenneth R. Martin was the first commanding officer of the 354th Fighter Group and led the unit through Stateside training and into combat in the European Theater of Operations. While escorting heavy bombers over enemy territory, he was downed over Germany on February 11, 1944 in a mid-air collision between his P-51 Mustang and a German Luftwaffe Me-410 Hornisse heavy fighter after encountering eight of the type and shooting down another Me-410. He survived the collision, became a Prisoner of War (POW) and was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for this combat action. Late in the war in Europe he and another officer escaped captivity; he was briefly reunited with his group at its first base in Germany. Col.
