Remembered, Not Forgotten on National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2020

This memorial plaque to 35th PRS pilot 1st Lt. Franklin H. McKinney, who went MIA on 5 November 1944, was presented in 2018 by Captain Daniel Jackson, USAF, also an author of China-Theater American military aviation history, to citizens in Ban Mae Kua, Thailand. Remembered, Not Forgotten on National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2020

First Lieutenant Merlin R. Allen was assigned to the 35th Photo Recon Squadron in 1944 and served as an aerial photo-interpreter. After deploying with the squadron to China at some point he was attached and/or reassigned to the 16th Combat Camera Unit (16th CCU) of 14th Air Force. Lt. The USS General C. C. Ballou (AP-157) was the General G. O. Squier-class navy transport that took the 35th PRS back to the US from India in Oct-Nov 1945. The ship was over 500 feet long, displaced over 17,000 tons when fully loaded and had a speed of 17 knots. With a crew of 356 it could accommodate over 3,800 troops. (NavSource)

According to the annotation on this image, 1st Lt Phillip L. French stood atop his steed, a Lockheed F-5E Photo Lightning. Lt. French went missing on 30 July 1945 on an administrative flight between Chanyi and Chihkiang while flying F-5E 43-28297, squadron number 805, nicknamed the “Blue Goose.” He is one of three 35PRS pilots still missing from the war, along with 1st Lt. Merroll J. Berringer and 1st Lt. Franklin H. McKinney.

Lockheed F-5E with the Redhawk emblem on the nose at rest in China. The aircraft has 32 completed photo mission symbols painted on it and a mountain symbol for the flight over the Himalayas, the “Hump,” from India into China in September 1944. Aircraft 810 was converted from P-38J-15-LO 43-28610 to became an F-5E-2-LO. The squadron used a three-digit number in the 801 to 825 range for quick identification of its aircraft. Standing behind them, from left to right, are Harry Bachman, Roy Wolford, Charles Estes, Harvey Lounsbury, Lorne Restau and Cyrus Dolph.
