Pilots of the 406th Fighter Squadron gather for a picture, possibly at Bisterne Airfield in the spring of 1944 sometime after May 17, 1944 when three of the men pictured were assigned to the squadron and before June 16 when the first of them was lost. The Women of Portland Army Air Base in World War II: Part I, 1941 to 1943

Mary F. Witt became the first commander of the WACs at PAAB in July of 1943, seeing the unit through several redesignations as the Army sought to optimize WAC unit designations and align them with similar units.
