The ADC “A” Awards of Oregon’s 142nd Fighter Group

The symbol of the Air (later Aerospace) Defense Command “A” Award was a blue swallow-tailed flag with a white capital letter A on it. The medium blue of this small sticker version of the “A” in the 142nd Wing History Archive is inaccurate - the actual “A” award blue was a darker blue, as can be seen in color pictures. Tell Their Stories, on National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, 2023

The Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag was first conceived in 1971 and soon adopted as a national flag to remind Americans of the prisoners and missing of the Vietnam War. In 1982, it became the only flag other than the Stars and Stripes to fly over the White House in Washington, D.C. On August 10, 1990, Congress passed U.S. Public Law 101-355, designating the POW/MIA flag as “The symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.” For many years the flag was flown on six national observances (Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and Veterans Day). With the National POW/MIA Flag Act of 2019 signed into law by President Trump, it is generally flown, concurrently, immediately below or adjacent to the United States flag as second in order of precedence displayed concurrently every day at federal locations already designated under existing law. In this undated 1970s picture, aircrew of the 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 142nd Fighter Group, Oregon Air National Guard (OreANG) at Portland ANG Base, Oregon, are seen here in concentration in the squadron’s old main briefing room. They are perhaps taking one of several annual or semi-annual written tests to ensure their familiarity and knowledge in some key aspect of operation of the McDonnell F-101B Voodoo fighter-interceptor which the squadron operated in the 1970s.

McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II serial number 63-7704 served in the 114th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron (OreANG) from Dec 1985 to 2 Mar 1987. McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II serial number 64-0776 served with the 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (OreANG) from 24 Sep 1980 to 24 Oct 1989. It achieved three aerial victories in SE Asia in April-May 1967. One was achieved with an AIM-7 Sparrow, another with an AIM-9 Sidewinder and the last with the SUU-16 20mm gun pod. The Oregon Air National Guard’s First Outstanding Unit Award

The Commander, Air Defense Command, Lt Gen Robert M. Lee, USAF (left) speaks as he presents Col Leon W. Gray (right), Portland Air Defense Sector (POADS) Commander, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award in a formal outdoor ceremony at Adair Air Force Station, Oregon in 1962. Lt Col Robert L. Stacklie, 123rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron Commander, looks on as seen in between the two general officers, his face facing the camera. POADS achieved a first as an air defense sector in being awarded the Air Force’s Outstanding Unit Award for the period June 8, 1960 to April 30, 1962. The sector headquarters at Adair AFS and its nine operational fighter-interceptor and radar squadrons (including the 123rd FIS) received the AFOUA for this period. The Oregon Air National Guard’s First Outstanding Unit Award

The 123rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron operated the Northrop F-89J Scorpion fighter-interceptor during the June 8, 1960 to April 30, 1962 award period for the squadron’s first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Here, Brad Newell, 123rd FIS pilot, dons his helmet in the front seat of an F-89J and George Smith is on the ladder, possibly serial number 53-2534, for a sortie. In the early years of the 123rd’s air defense alert operations, the squadron had no dedicated alert facility nor covered shelter for its aircraft sitting alert although this began to change in the later years of the F-89J era, 1960 to 1966.
