Capt. Thomas J. Mueller, the “B” Flight commander in the 371st Fighter Group’s 404th Fighter Squadron, was 2nd Lt. Joseph E. Larochelle’s flight leader on D-Day when Larochelle was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He himself was killed on a combat mission near Mortain, France a few weeks later, on July 31, 1944. This plain portrait image of 2nd Lt. Robert A. Mezzetti was typical of those taken as a reference for pilots during the Second World War. Lt. Mezzetti was assigned to the 405th Fighter Squadron on May 18, 1944 and killed in action on August 2, 1944 near Liffré, France. He flew combat in the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane in the Air Offensive, Europe, Normandy and Northern France campaigns in the European Theater of Operations and was credited with one aerial victory.
