Veterans of The Mighty Eighth: The Oregon Air National Guard’s connections to the Eighth Air Force of World War II

Capt. Kay A. Baker was a charter member of Oregon’s first military aviation unit, the 123rd Observation Squadron. He later went to pilot training and became a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress pilot assigned to the 613th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group in England. The Air National Guard ramp at Portland AFB, Oregon during the F-89 era, circa 1960-61 during the transition from the F-89H to the F-89J. There are 21 F-89 Scorpion interceptors in view, along with two T-33A jet trainers. The Oregon ANG’s G. Robert Dodson aircraft maintenance hangar, completed in 1956 and named in honor of the “founding father” of the Oregon ANG, wears the name of the organization. This was the course of instruction for the 15-week ANG Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) School from the ANG Student Study Guide and Workbook for ANG Syllabus Number 156102, Basic Intercept Techniques (BIT), current as of January, 1963. A pair of Oregon ANG F-89J Scorpion fighter-interceptors ply the skies of the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1960s. These aircraft wear the “ADC Gray” paint that was on the additional F-89J aircraft provided to Portland for the ANG RIO School in 1962. They served at Portland from 1960 to 1966. ADC Gray eventually replaced the natural metal finish of all the Oregon ANG’s original F-89Js. Seen in the distance are Mt. Rainier at the right edge and perhaps Mt. The Storm Before the Calm – October, 1962 Part 2: The ANG RIO School

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was the Oregon ANG’s primary aircraft assigned from mid-1957 until early 1966. Pictured at the center is F-89J serial number 53-2555, the third variant of the Scorpion the Oregon ANG operated (D, H and J), and the type for which the ANG Radar Intercept Officer School trained RIOs for nine ANG F-89J squadrons. It started life as an F-89D and was upgraded into an F-89J. It served in Oregon from 1963 to February, 1966, when it was flown to storage at the Davis-Monthan AFB bone yard in Arizona.
