The Storm Before the Calm – October, 1962 Part 2: The ANG RIO School
The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was the Oregon ANG’s primary aircraft assigned from mid-1957 until early 1966. Pictured at the center is F-89J serial number 53-2555, the third variant of the Scorpion the Oregon ANG operated (D, H and J), and the type for which the ANG Radar Intercept Officer School trained RIOs for nine ANG F-89J squadrons. It started life as an F-89D and was upgraded into an F-89J. It served in Oregon from 1963 to February, 1966, when it was flown to storage at the Davis-Monthan AFB bone yard in Arizona. The school ran for about three years, from late 1962 to late 1965 at Portland AFB, Oregon (142nd Wing History Archive)
